This special Chats & Handicrafts session invites 705 members to celebrate Día de los Muertos, a Mexican tradition that honors the lives of those who have passed with beauty, color, and love. Together, we’ll explore the artistry behind La Catrina — an enduring symbol of remembrance and resilience — while creating floral crowns inspired by this vibrant cultural icon.

The event aims to be a joyful space for learning and creativity, highlighting the craftsmanship that defines our members’ work and honoring the deeper meaning behind this beloved tradition. We hope to foster cultural appreciation and community within Local 705 while providing an inclusive, hands-on creative experience as we explore how costume and craft can connect us to culture, memory, and spirit.

What we’ll be doing:
Context & Reflection

  • Understanding Día de los Muertos: Seeing death as transformation — not loss.
  • The Symbols & Costumes: The origins of La Catrina and her message.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Quick do’s and don’ts for honoring the tradition respectfully.

Creative Intention (A brief meditation to set our creative purpose — honoring loved ones through artistry.
Craft Activity Design and assemble your own Catrina-inspired floral crown using your 705 craft skills. Guidance will be provided on structure, materials, and symbolic choices.
Community & Connection Open space for conversation, sharing creations, and enjoying themed treats.

We will be using floral wire, faux flowers, fabric scraps, trims, elastic, ribbons, crystals, cardboard, needles and thread, glue, and headbands. We will supply all materials needed but attendees are also welcome to bring their own.

Treats: Pan de muerto, hot chocolate, and light snacks to enjoy while we create and connect.

Please note: This event is not a costume or Halloween activity — it’s a creative way to learn, connect, and celebrate a tradition rooted in love and respect.
