Studio costume departments offer the advantage of a huge inventory including large collections of period and contemporary costumes. They can also supplement productions with their own tailoring, manufacturing, and rentals.

A Costume House offers a one-stop shop to acquire period costumes, accessories, or manufacture other costumes when your department is under the gun or has its hands full. Most of these costume houses provide rentals, workrooms, Prep Space and supplies.

The costume houses listed here are union signatories, meaning they provide union wages and benefits to their employees, fellow 705 members. It’s important that we as union members always exhaust signatory union sources before going to nonunion rental houses. While a production is allowed to rent or buy finished costumes from any source, most of our contracts forbid costume manufacturing from nonunion sources without express permission in advance from the Business Office! This includes specialty costumes like superhero suits, aliens, and sports uniforms.
